Word Choices Affect Attitudes Toward Addiction Recovery

Perhaps one of the greatest impacts we have on our clients is the relationship we establish with them. The words we choose when referring to them and in discussing their issues, to a great extent, determine the quality of that relationship. Labeling the person with negative words or phrases, such as "addict" or "substance abuser", has been shown not only to set up negative responses in therapeutic relationships but paves the way for peoples view of themselves and their perceived capability for positive change.

The article Word Choices Affect Attitudes Toward Addiction Recovery , on the Jointogether.org website, provides a summary of research published in the International Journal of Drug Policy. A link to the original article may be found in that summary.

Also helpful to remember is that these principles are equally useful in daily living. Look for information on "Labeling" in psychology and sociology texts.
